Water-filled tubular steel columns -- Fire protection without coating
Adequate fire resistance may be obtained for tubular-steel building columns without use of fire-resistant coatings by filling columns with water; this protection will be used for exterior columns of CORT EN steel for 64-story U S Steel Corp building under construction in Pittsburgh, Pa, leaving columns fully exposed to weather; potassium carbonate will be used in water as antifreeze; columns are divided into four vertical zones to avoid excessive internal pressure; adequate water storage to obtain 4 hr fire resistance is provided for each zone; tubular interior columns can also be protected by water; details adequate for design are given.
