New way to sink caissons
Notes on Lorenz/Fehlmann method of caisson sinking, which uses bentonite as lubricant around caisson; it is noted that reinforced concrete "toe" of caisson always extends slightly beyond caisson periphery to form rebate; this allows for presence of thin skin of bentonite between caisson and ground; in typical operation, bentonite is forced into narrow space around caisson periphery through injection pipes cast in concrete; caisson sinks under its own weight as interior is excavated.
