Long caissons support overpass
Unstable soil required sinking of 12 caissons for 150-ft long, 90-ft wide reinforced, concrete overpass for Quebec's North Shore Expressway; caissons were 39 in. in diam with 1/2-in. wall of A-36 steel, designed for maximum load of 2100 tons, installed in sections 34, 44 and 60 ft long; abutting sections were coupled with 12-in. high outside sleeves; to assist research program of Canadian National Research Council on settlement of friction piles, strain gages and piezometers were installed in one caisson and instrumented 12-in. diam steel pile was placed outside bridge area.
