Visual illusion and design of interior walls
Effects of repetitive patterns of wall texturing on human eye and brain, and main conditions necessary for effects are examined; it is shown how in auditorium of Academy of Science building in Canberra, Australia, illusion of wall movement is induced in more than half of any audience looking at patterns of vertical wooden members lining hall; strips are formed by 4×2 in. uprights of pale-colored wood, between which is shadow cavity; complex has useful acoustic properties but is visually disturbing; vertical members range from 10 to 32 ft in height and gaps between them are uneven, varying from 2 to 2 1/2 in.
