Brown's timber railroad bridges
In mid 1800's, engineer Brown attained considerable fame for bridges built of timber for railroads in United States; Prof Karl Cullmann reported on these and other bridges in England and America in Allgemeine Bauzeitung, Vienna, in 1851 and 1852; present article is translation of excerpts from this report by M.Steinhaus; arch bridge with clear span of 275 ft, to carry Erie Railroad over gorge 175 ft deep near Lanesboro, Pa, is described as one of most magnificent wood structures in world; problems with 160-ft bowstring truss developed when same design was extended for use in three continuous spans of 196 ft; Cullmann states that American engineers at that time were assuming lower values for live load and higher stresses than their European counterparts.
