Continuous-composite all-welded bridges
Three plate girder bridges are being built in Maine; of moderate span (longest is 202 - 270 - 202 ft) they utilize low-alloy high-strength steels; design refinements include details requiring only single-pass welding and few transverse stiffeners; equalizing interior and exterior girder loads; duplication of most fabricated parts; and permissible alternatives in plate-web thicknesses; three structures demonstrate broad application of welded-girder bridges but are sufficiently similar that comparisons provide ideas for other designers.
