A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Coordinated design research program conducted under sponsorship of U S Steel Corp on subject of steel box girder bridges is discussed; objective of investigation was development of design theory, methods, and specifications for steel bridges of short to medium span lengths with composite decks; work included theoretical, computer, and model test studies; all factors point to expanded and economic application of steel composite box bridges for simple and continuous short spans, and extension of such use to bridges which may be highly skewed, curved, or grossly irregular in geometric arrangement of box elements.
