Australia's longest clear span will be stayed girder bridge
Design for 3-mi bridge and approaches over Lower Yarra River near Melbourne will have oblique instead of continuous catenary cables to support main span at only few points; this design will cut down on steel weight and eliminate site welding; approach spans will have trapezoidal precast concrete box girder on cellular piers (cross-section is shown) to accommodate large thermal expansion and contraction expected from long lengths of viaducts; continuous deck will be fixed by pin joints to its columns; deck will move from fixed abutment towards expansion joints at junction between steel bridge and concrete viaducts.
