Economic value of new breakwater armour unit 'Dolos'
Dolos, new type of armor unit which closely resembles normal ship's anchor, was developed and tried out under field conditions on main breakwater of East London harbor; since these full-scale units proved successful, tests were made in wave channel to compare stability of Dolos with other known types of armor blocks; test results showed that Dolos is outstandingly stable; Dolos is made of concrete poured around scrap rails; it is concluded that in many cases use of Dolos in armor layers may lead to more economical solutions for rubble mound breakwater and shore protection works.
