Noise spectra from flow through aortic valves
Sounds produced by flow of water through orifices in plates and through aortic valves of sheep's hearts were studied; musical tones were produced by cylindrical passages with square entrances, provided that length/ diameter ratio was between one-half and two and Re was between 2000 and 20,000; other orifice shapes and flow through aortic valves produced noise; relationship between degree of artificial stenosis and some characteristic of noise spectrum was sought; partly because of experimental difficulties and also because heart specimens varied in size, such correlation, if it exists, has proved elusive; at present it appears that amplitude vs frequency plots have humps and hollows that increase in magnitude as valve opening decreases.
