Inelastic beams under moment gradient
Behavior of wide flange beams loaded into inelastic range under moment gradient conditions; it is shown that loads in excess of plastic moment can be expected and lateral buckling is not as critical as previous studies had indicated; frequently, local buckling is controlling factor and this allows rotation capacity to be determined; use of theory based on local buckling to show that hinge angle that can be delivered is constant; lower bound estimate of hinge angle; test results confirm lower bound nature of hinge angle theory; primary consequence of high shear forces is to reduce rotation capacity of beam.
