Analyses of pit slides in some incompetent rocks
Twenty-two pit slides that occurred in 2 Canadian open pit mining properties are analyzed; results of laboratory tests of rocks and description of geological environment; slides seem to be predictable by using established theory; appropriate slope angle should vary with height of wall; in addition if general groundwater level around open pit can be reduced, appropriate slope angles of walls could then be increased by determinable amount.
