Openings in masonry walls on settling supports
Study to examine influence of apertures on wall-strength, to compare various methods of stiffening by reinforced concrete ties and by vertical prestressing of masonry; influence of amount of reinforcement in ties; tests were performed on half-size models of 1-story concrete block walls continuous over 3 isolated supports with reinforced concrete foundation beams and ties; analysis based on analogy of wall with truss with vertical ties acting in tension is reported to give good results and method of design based on it is proposed.
