Petrography finds widespread application in selection, testing, and manufacture or processing of materials for concrete; concrete research and evaluation of concrete in service, particularly investigation of causes for distress or failure; techniques of petrography include visual examination of concrete structures and of samples supplied from field and laboratory, as well as detailed examination by stereoscopic microscope, by petrographic microscope by means of immersion liquids and thin sections, and by metallographic microscope by means of polished and etched surfaces.
