Caving sewer trenches whipped
Unusual method of construction of 15-in. sewers at New Shawneetown, Ill; quicksand stopped hand trenching and hindered machine work, and swelling bottom floated sewer pipe; this was met by pulling working box along trench behind excavator, laying pipe within box and backfilling behind it; manholes were built as open caissons.
