Quality of asphaltic products is considered to lie in their chemical composition and in relation between chemical composition and physical properties such as penetration, viscosity, and ductility; methods of separation of asphalts into three major components; solvent extraction; functions of asphaltic constituents; oxidation of asphalts; production of asphalts stable to oxidation would reduce maintenance costs on projects where asphalts are used.
