The Mittelland canal and the Anderten locks
Project aims at connecting German rivers, which flow essentially northward, by great west-to-east waterway, navigable for craft of 1000 tons; locks of main canal are 738 ft. long and 39 ft. wide; pair of locks at Anderten connects 132-mi. stretch of canal from Muenster to Ems and Hanover; site was selected because ground there consists of firm lime marl capable of supporting loading of 7 kg. per sq. cm.; work involved excavation of some 9,000,000 cu. yd. of material.
