Evolution of dam construction for artificial lakes
Comparative study of ancient and modern designs. For heights up to 90 ft. earth embankment with drainage aqueduct of Ambursen type is preferred; from 90 ft. to 180 ft. masonry dams are advised, specially multiple-arch dams for greater heights; for heights from 180 ft. to 300 ft. and in exceptional cases when expense is secondary element, masonry gravity dams are considered the safest. Paper read before Societe des Ingenieurs et Architectes italiens.
