Mole bores tunnel no 1, miners, no. 2.
Special equipment for two tunnels on links of Navajo Indian Irrigation Project; Tunnel No. 1, 2-mi long, 18-ft in diam, uses specially designed tunneling machine exerting 1.4 million lb thrust for 5-ft boring stroke, maintains line and grade with electronic guidance system using laser beam; Tunnel No. 2 is horseshoe-shaped, downstream, using two-deck, rail-mounted jumbo with six drifters, drilling 70-hole pattern, 12 ft deep to pull 11 ft of hole; each drill hole is loaded with 9 Ib of ammonium nitrate; details on muck handling, ventilation and lining of tunnels.
