Rotterdam's rapid transit tunnel built by sunken-tube method
Under construction is 3.7 mi of new rapid transit line of which 2 mi is underground and rest elevated; under-river tunnel sections are prefabricated in sections 15 m long, then assembled into lengths of 90 m or 75 m, for placing; after these are sunk into position, adjustable pile heads are forced up against them from below by grout injected under pressure; land units, partly submerged, are transported through sheet-pile trench; land tunnel in downtown area is also constructed by sunken-tube method.
