Pressure exerted on tunnels lining by surrounding ground depend not only on characteristics of geological formations and on boundary conditions, but also on excavation and lining procedures; in some cases it is of first importance that very short time is allowed between excavation and lining operation; in this way progressive loosening of rock surrounding excavation due to stress release is avoided or at least reduced; application of sprayed concrete lining in tunnel on Genova-Sestri highway.
