Special rigs speed up drilling and mucking on tunnel job
Combination of new rock drilling and mucking methods works on 2400 ft long conduit beneath Newtown Creek in Brooklyn, NY, close to railroad tunnels, aqueducts and bridge piers, punching horseshaped bore through hard granite 150 ft below ground at average 35 ft/three-shift day; water bearing, fractured rock was pregrouted; construction called for development of umbrella-like jumbo and special mucker; for conduit, drills were taken off shaft jumbo and completely mechanized tunnel jumbo with full remote controls was assembled; it drills 80-hole pattern in 13 ft wide by 16 ft high bore in 1 hr.
