Post-tensioned vierandeel truss used in arcade construction
Imperial Arcade, department store in Sydney, Australia, is reinforced concrete structure with grid of oblong columns spaced 20×25 ft; to assure maneuverability of trucks in lower basement two columns had to be eliminated and post-tensioned Vierandeel type truss was constructed between street level and floor above, supporting columns to upper levels; truss was cast-in-situ and incorporated system of 30 cables placed in ducts prior to placing of concrete; calculations were confirmed by independent check conducted on computer at Department of Civil Engineering, University of New South Wales.
