Efficient method for obtaining flexibility matrix of structure by selective inversion of its stiffness matrix is presented; this method, direct solution technique, is developed for displacement method of structural analysis; technique can be applied to both general and banded stiffness matrices; algorithm for Gauss elimination, designed for symmetric, positive definite matrices, is described; timing comparisons (operation counts) are given for banded and fully populated matrices; simple numerical example is given that illustrates solution algorithm and selective inversion process.
