Design of combined frames and shear walls
Need for rapid manual method of determining proportion of load carried by each element of structure; to satisfy this need procedure conforming to routine office practice based on taking advantage of characteristic behavior of frames is presented; procedure consists of relating total load at each floor level to displacements of that floor and two floors above and below; at each level equation is written in terms of relative stiffness of columns, girders, shear wall and applied loading; to illustrate facility with which interaction of shear wall and frame can be determined, complete analysis of building is presented as example.
