Research in plastic design of multi-story frames
Advances made since 1956 are reviewed and research being conducted at Lehigh University on plastic design of multistory building frames is described; discussion includes braced and unbraced frames; results of pilot tests on three-story structure are presented; in " braced" multistory frames it is shown that additional economies are possible in comparison with methods currently being used; methods of proportioning bracing members are developed; tests have shown that substitution of high strength steel for structural carbon steel in columns, but using structural carbon steel girders can decrease drift in story height by 40% or more.
