Maximum load-carrying capacity of building frame that is not braced to prevent lateral displacement is determined by inelastic buckling strength; numerical procedure for determining buckling load of partially yielded frames is developed and its use is illustrated with reference to simple portal frame; tests on steel models fabricated from small wide-flange shape were conducted and results show satisfactory agreement with theoretical solutions.
