Use of characteristic imperfect shape and its application to buckling of isolated column; basis for design of structures subject to buckling is proposed; structure is assumed to be initially imperfect in shape, shape chosen being characteristic shape of equivalent ideal structure; method is claimed to have advantages of being general, rational and convenient.
