Review of literature on factors influencing deformation of soils is presented; consolidation tests carried out on kaolinite and montmorillonite with different polar and nonpolar liquids reveal influence of dielectric constant on double layer and on interparticle forces; significant effects are noticed in compressibility and permeability in case of montmorillonite as result of different pore fluids whereas kaolinite is only slightly affected; equilibrium void ratios and compressibility tend to increase with temperature.
