Equations derived for beam on uniform subgrade; diagrams show conspicuous increase of strength only when beam becomes very short; narrow cracks may act to some extent as hinged joints transmitting vertical forces between slabs; longitudinal joints reduce frequency of wide cracks; thickened outer edges delay cracking; settlements in subgrade may produce effects similar to those due to changes of temperature; formulas derived for computing stresses resulting from deformations in subgrade.
