A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Hydroelectric industry has had very rapid growth in past 50 years; turbine development since 1916 has been paralleled by intensive study and improvement of water passages, especially of draft tubes; development in art of dam construction has been evidenced largely by greater variety of type and ever-increasing height; nineteenth century witnessed construction of many excellent examples of masonry and concrete gravity dams, ranging up to 200 ft. high, and many important earth structures by both dry-rolled fill and hydraulic-fill methods.
