Ultimate bearing capacity of foundations
Theory of bearing capacity developed on basis of plasticity by extended previous analysis for surface footing to shallow and deep foundations; results can be represented by bearing capacity factors; bearing capacity increases with size, depth, and roughness of base; observed capacity of shallow foundations is in agreement with theory; for deep foundations, however, actual base resistance is less than results derived theoretically.
