Rock pressure is caused in part by weight of overlying strata and in part by forces arising from tectonic conditions; if cavity is created, equilibrium is disturbed and forces develop which tend to set rock in motion to fill cavity; new science called barodynamics has achieved considerable practical importance in connection with stratified formations, particularly in soft rock and in other formations when depth is great. English abstract from Jernkontorets Annaler n 11 1943 p 569.
