Infiltration galleries at the Des Moines, Iowa, Water
Water is obtained through a system of collecting galleries, which constitute a horizontal well two miles in length, tapping a coarse sand stratum 15 to 20 ft. in thickness, and is derived almost entirely from infiltration from Raccoon River, which roughly parallels gallery system at a distance from 150 to 200 ft. Fundamental principles of this supply, conditions that make it possible, and quantity and quality of water obtained.
