No closed theory is available for determining bearing capacity of piles from soil characteristics, but for cohesionless soils, good relations have been found lately between bearing capacity of piles and density resp. angle of internal friction of soils; it is possible to predict bearing capacity of pile by penetrometer soundings or standard penetration tests; tests and theoretical considerations also provided better knowledge about bearing capacity of pile groups and piles under horizontal load.
