Results of loading tests on 1/4 to 1/2 in. diam piles partially embedded in dry sand are presented; all piles failed by buckling; experimental critical buckling loads were found to agree well with theoretical buckling loads predicted from equation by M.T.Davisson and K.E.Robinson, and thus tend to support use of this theoretical equation for designing full size, long, partially embedded piles against possibility of buckling.
