Grit and shot-reinforced high tensile bolted joints
Tests show that paint in such joints drastically reduces frictional resistance to slip; grit and shot placed between painted contact surfaces increases frictional resistance; shot reinforced painted joints are, in static tests, equal to or somewhat better than clean mill-scale joints and much superior to riveted joints.
