Blasting rock tunnels under Pittsburgh residential district
Construction of 36 × 26 1/2 ft twin tunnel, 4225 ft long; holes for blasting drilled from three deck steel framed jumbos; explosives were Hercules 30 and 40% Gelatin Extra, in 1 1/4 by 8 in. Tamptite cartridges; 1.75 lb of dynamite to 1 cu yd of rock in solid were required; tunnel headings ventilated by fans of 54 in. diam each powered by 75-hp motor.
