Effect of retained austenite upon mechanical properties
Retained austenite contents of AISI 2340 steel specimens determined by means of integrated X-ray intensities; steel retains 6% austenite, and it can be reduced to 2% by refrigeration; retained austenite decomposes within gage length of tension bar during testing prior to necking; austenite reduces elastic limit, yield strength, fracture stress, and energy absorption in tension.
