Extra lanes on grades provide cheaper mountain highways
Extra lane for uphill travel is added to U S 99 highway between Roseburg and Grants Pass in Oregon when grade exceeds 4%; advantages are reduced first cost, operating cost and maintenance cost; accidents are reduced; 4-lane pavement is 46 ft wide with 4-ft shoulder on each side; 3-lane pavement is 34 ft wide with 4-ft shoulder on each side and 2-lane pavement is 24 ft wide with 9-ft shoulder on each side.
