New Zealand development in full operation by Dec 1966 has six generators that will be capable of maximum output of 540 Mw; earth dam is rolled fill with central core; design flood for Benmore spillway is 120,000 cu sec; four radial steel gates, each 40 ft high and 35 ft wide, housed in concrete spillway dam, can pass this flow with lake 3 ft above normal working level; each of six main penstocks has diameter of 17.5 ft, is 500 ft long and has working head of 300 ft; main legs of penstocks lie on 35° penstock slope; electrical features of plant and of 600 Mw d-c transmission link to North Island.
