1300-ton capacity prestressed anchors stabilize dam
Wanapum hydro power plant on Columbia River provides for ten installed and six future generating units; to reduce initial outlay, construction of monoliths for these six units was limited to intakes; intakes lacked stability; tying them down to rock foundation with prestressed anchors was practical and most economical solution; 13 anchors, each of nearly 1300-ton capacity and 70 ft deep, were required for each monolith, using conventional 45° wedge theory; each anchor consisted of four BBRV type cables, each cable containing 90 1/4 in. -diam parallel high-strength steel wires with cold formed button head ends and perforated steel anchor heads.
