Discharge characteristics of partially open tainter gates
Theoretical and laboratory studies of unstable flow range in operation of partially open tainter gate are discussed; article is concerned with hydraulic hysteresis that exists in gate performance; on prototype spillway, variations of some 20% were observed in discharges; associated with this unstable gate performance were corresponding changes in reservoir surface elevation; tests were conducted on 1 to 40 scale model of medium height gravity dam with standard crest spillways and 30×21 ft tainter crest gates.
