Foundations on fissured limestone -- How they were selected
Apartment and commercial development with buildings up to 29 stories high along Mississippi River in St. Louis is on fissured limestone; extensive studies indicated that for three 3-story buildings, cast-in-place concrete piles for 40-ton loads, or 10 BP 42 for 50-ton loads, were acceptable; steel piles were used; test driving and withdrawing showed that short piles could withstand only three blows with Delmag D-12 hammer after reaching "refusal", or 3/8 in. penetration into rock; high-rise units are supported on piers to rock with minimum of 7 to 10 ft of solid rock above fissures accepted; fissures were filled with portland cement grout under 200-psi pressure.
