Airborne infrared scanning techniques in wildfire situations permit defining of location and extent of forest fire perimeters in spite of darkness and smoke; it is possible to locate existence and location of spot fires outside of main fire perimeter; rate of spread may be measured by plotting sequential perimeters at regular intervals.
