Results of tests to define Reynolds stress tensor in one corner of straight, smooth, closed conduit of rectangular cross section; measurements are used in conjunction with simplified version of equations of motion to conclude that secondary motions will be present in any established flow in conduit of non-circular section; one of boundaries may be free surface; sustaining mechanism for secondary motion is shown to depend on horizontal and vertical components of turbulent motion.
