Monastic chapel in new world of lighting
New chapel of St. Fidelis Seminary in Butler County, Pa had to be styled to fit in with older buildings; requirements of lighting design included fairly high lighting level which could not impinge on feeling of serenity and quiet; changes made in Catholic liturgy encourage minimum of distractions, such as statues, excessive ornamentation, and ornamental lanterns; final design selected meets both old and new requirements; there are no exposed luminaires to interfere with symbols of liturgy; lighting canopy leads eye directly to sanctuary and crucifix; by incorporating special spotlights into general lighting fixtures down center of nave, uncluttered appearance of fixture location pattern was protected.
