Building dam in black Canyon
Double curvature concrete arch and underground power house are second unit of Curecanti project; five-state hydroelectric power and irrigation program; concrete dam will have crest length of 733 ft and will be 469 ft high, but only 52 ft thick at base and 12 ft thick at crest, with reservoir capacity of 117,000 acre-ft; underground power installation will house two 60,000-kw generators in left dam abutment just downstream from dam and about 160 ft from canyon wall face; construction site being in narrow Gunnison River Canyon required special design specifications, construction procedure, power generation, concrete mixing, and forming equipment.
