Wells dam design saves millions
Design and construction of Wells Dam on Columbia River; by combining spillway, powerhouse, fish-passage facilities and switchyard in single 1165-ft long concrete structure, it is claimed that saving of 15 million dollars in total project cost was realized; problems encountered in construction of mass concrete spillway section and separate powerhouse, involving placing of 580,000 cu yd of concrete reinforced with 68 million lb of steel, while concurrently installing power generating equipment; concrete structure rises 200 ft above bedrock; it is 172 ft from back to front; earth embankments connect main structure's end walls to left and right abutments to complete 4500-ft-long dam.
