Model analyses of arch dam with different valley stiffnesses
Experimental study was made of two concrete models of circular arch dam of constant thickness, described as Type 1 in program of Arch Dam Research Committee of Institution of Civil Engineers; first model dam was made of cement mortar and was designed to have approximately same modulus of elasticity as concrete valley; second model dam was made of pumice concrete, having low modulus of elasticity, in valley of high modulus; in both models, behavior of dam under water load and without gravity was determined; water load was simulated by hydraulic jacks, acting on loading pads on model dam; stresses were calculated from surface strains measured by electric resistance strain gages.
